Book Reading #1: Chapter 3

The Design of Everyday Things

By: Donald A. Norman

Chapter 3
In this chapter, Dr. Norman talks about many interesting, but over looked, ways memory works.  This chapter was a real eye opener to how I should memorize things as well as how to explain to others my ideas so they are more likely to understand and retain it.  The successful transfer of ideas is clearly a vital property to any sort of group environment.  When attempting to remember something my first action is to repeat it in my head over and over which as Dr. Norman said is burdensome because it requires a lot of mental thought.  I have always told myself to use my phone to keep track of dates, but now I have even more motivation to do so after reading this chapter.  I like his prediction of the emergence of the first PDAs and small cellphones.  It was not a far fetched prediction at the time by any means, but I grinned when I read it.  He gives many points about the ways we retain memory and I think it would be incredibly beneficial for teachers to always be aware of these simple, but not obvious, concepts.
