The Design of Everyday Things
By: Donald A. Norman
Chapter 6I thought the evolution of the keyboard was interesting since it is universally accepted and the layout has always caught made me wonder how it actually came to be. Also believe that designers have to understand that they are not typical users. It is essential to get as many different inputs on a design as possible which was also talked about in chapter 5. Dr. Norman's evolution of design is very true and I believe that the market place is actually moving into that direction again since this book was written. It is not completely there yet, but it certainly has improved. I think Dr. Norman has had a few too many bad experiences with shower faucets. He spends a considerable amount of time (more than he does on doors) in this chapter pointing out different poor faucet designs. He briefly mentions designs that unintentionally added too many features which make them look like a technological work of art to people who do not know how difficult they are to use. I think he should have talked about examples of devices with too many features and how to avoid it than shower faucets. The end of the chapter was devoted to computers and how they were oriented to computer programmers instead of the users. He finishes with an accurate depiction of the technology we have today.
