Book Reading #1: Chapter 5

The Design of Everyday Things

By: Donald A. Norman

Chapter 5
Dr. Norman begins by explaining different types of errors in detail and then how they should be handled by a device.  The design of a good device must be error friendly whether that is by reducing them out right or making them easily reversible when they happen.  I have come in contact with a few websites, such as elearning, that do not save work in text boxes, so if you submit the text answers while there is an internet error all of the text is lost.  I have to write it in Word and then copy it over to be safe.  That is an annoyance that should not exist in larger websites.  Dr. Norman then talks about the theory of how the mind works that he believes in.  I found his view to be very interesting and found myself thinking that I think that way about things.  I am not sure if I truly think in the connectionist approach or whether I am just thinking of specific times that fit its theory.  He goes on to explain the different forms of forcing functions.  I think that forcing functions are the best way to reduce errors since they are unavoidable and require the correct procedure.  I will attempt to use them every time they make sense in a design.
